Hollow Branches

hb

Introduced via their record label, Audio Savant, in 2005, Robert Osgood and Marius Sjøli quickly realized their shared musical vision. A short while later they began collaborating on Robert’s recently minted project, Hollow Branches. In 2009, with the assistance of Jason Walton (Agalloch) on bass, Hollow Branches released the “Words are Fire” and “Anchored in Sleep” EPs, with a short 10 month gap between releases. Both self-released EPs were downloaded hundreds of times and received favorable reviews in publications such as Scratch the Surface, The Dreaded Press, and Absolute Zero.

Writing for their first full length album, “Okanagana Waves”, began immediately following completion of “Anchored in Sleep,” with primary recording wrapping in July 2010 when Robert travelled to Norway to track vocals and guitar at Sjøli Studio. While ten songs were written, only seven made the final cut. The music was kept comparatively sparse, with less overdubs and tracks used than on the two previous EPs. A year passed before bass was finally recorded, with Mathew Kennedy (Phideaux) lending his talents, and bringing an entirely new element to the sound. Featured on the title track, is T.E. Moore, of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, who provided a recording of an Okanagana Bella cicada, he made in the field in 1965. The cicada features prominently in the albums audio/visual aesthetic.

Musically, “Okanagana Waves” takes influence from progressive rock, dark ambient, and neo-folk, while exploring themes as diverse as anxiety, skepticism, and the indifferent beauty of nature.

EFFLORESCE: Making of “Coma Ghosts” Part 1 of 3

Check below the video from the recording session of the Effloresce‘s debut “Coma Ghosts” due on February 10 on Generation Prog Records.

Low Sonic Drift

lsd1s

Founded in 2007, Low Sonic Drift are a psychedelic minded heavy metal outfit from Glasgow, Scotland. The current line up of the band is Omar Aborida (guitar/vocals), Paul Wilson (bass) and Javaud Habibi (drums).

Their influences are drawn from sources far and wide; from bands of the desert such as Kyuss and Karma to Burn to the forests of Scandinavia (Opeth, Enslaved) and everywhere in between. As such their music is a vigorous combination of grandiose instrumental passages, chilled psychotropic grooves and monumental thrash style riffage. Combine that with relentless energy and a keen sense of adventure; Low Sonic Drift possess a formidable live show and have shared the stage with such acts as Orange Goblin, WeedeaterAbominable Iron Sloth, Brant Bjork, HumanflyBlack Sun, Stinking Lizaveta and a host of other low-frequency outfits.

Their debut mini-album “Shadows of the Titan” was released by Glasgow based independent record label Theoretical Records in May 2009 and features the tracks ‘Sun Doesn’t Rise’ and ‘Shadows’. Since its release, “Shadows of the Titan” has received rave reviews from magazines, webzines and blogs across the planet. The band are currently working on the follow up to “Shadows of the Titan” which is set for release in the Summer of 2012, hopefully allowing some time for listeners to get a feel for the record before the End of the World on the 21st of December 2012.

“Bay Area meets Marrakesh, Low Sonic Drift weave their psychedelic thrash tapestries around complex song structures and top drawer musicianship.”
Ninehertz.co.uk

“This mighty trio from Glasgow eschew the frippery and foppery of modern music for something bigger, deeper and darker than most.”
TheList – 4/5

“A remarkable release from a remarkable band.”
The Sleeping Shaman

“‘Shadows Of The Titan’ is an extremely entertaining and cohesive album with slightly progressive tendencies”
Cosmic Lava

“Shadows of the Titan is a 5-track mini-LP clocking in at a respectable 32 minutes. Awesomely, the opening track is a sprawling 9 minute stoner / thrash / prog epic which lays out the LSD manifesto of complex shifting riffs, grooving heaviness and excellent musicianship. A highly recommended release.”
Roadburn.com

“On the five tracks here, Low Sonic Drift display more imagination, talent and flair than some bands display their entire careers.”
Born Again Nihilist

“The music is thick. It’s heavy and it’s one of those albums where you’ll find yourself headbanging without realizing it.”
The Soda Shop

Johnny Engstrom Band Working On a New Album

Johnny Engstrom Band have come up with an announcement regarding the Magnetic Force (2011, Alienation Records) follow-up. The mainman behind this Swedish progressive metal band, Johnny Engstrom itself, says in a letter:

The new material has been written, 11 songs and we have been rehearsing playing and learning five of them so far. We have a working title that I don’t want to share at this moment, haha. The songs seem to be around 6-7 minutes long with the possibility of one or two tracks being longer.

We plan to start recording in a timeframe of maybe 2 months or so. As soon as the studio is booked we will have the exact date, we are looking at some different options.

I’m thinking of writing sort of a concept lyric wise. There have been so many close friends and family members passing away lately that I’m considering writing about ghosts in some mysterious way.

Musically the songs seem lean more towards prog than Metal, but I guess that’s too early to say at this point of time. We like to blend throwing in some heavy riffs here and there. At this point we are trying to find the perfect tempo for each song, arranging and playing around with rhythms to make everything as interesting as possible to listen to.

Other than that all I can say is that we are very excited about this next album. It will be great. I’m sure!

John Duva’s “Arbetsnarkomaner” Single Out on February 8

The first track from JOHN DUVA‘s self-titled album is published by Transubstans Records. The smashing anti-society anthem “Arbetsnarkomaner” (video below) is a clear view of JOHN DUVA’s opinion on routine and everyday jobs.

Arbetsnarkomaner” will be released as a digital single worldwide on February 8, and will also feature a b-side consisting of another track from the debut “Vi Drar Vårt Strå“.

Their coming album is finally available for pre-order HERE.

Trigon

Trigons

Trigon from the city of Karlsruhe, Germany, a more than energetic unit which is able to improvise in their sleep, celebrating an orgiastic combination of swinging drumming (Rudi Metzler), pulsating bass (Stefan Lange) and Rainer Lange‘s psychedelic guitar towering above everything. Rough and wild and loud and electric, sometimes even sombre: Trigon concentrate music to its core which they themselves call “HeavyZenJazz“, but they don’t care about rigid genre boundaries: humor, spontaneity and irrisitible, playful charme are the trademarks of the dynamic trio.

John Duva

John Duva

JOHN DUVA is a band from Åre in northern Sweden; a place where they’ve lived and played together for a long time. Lately, the band moved south, to the archipelagos of Stockholm. They are all traveling from different cities in Sweden to meet up and play on the island of Yxlan, Stockholm, pretty much all the time!

With an attitude and a burning passion, they meet up to play and to dispose the frustration of waking up and wasting their time with routines and everyday jobs. This is the main factor for their inspiration, and the heart of their music; to break free from standard living and create a reality of their own which consists of music and pure energy. JOHN DUVA is band that you don’t categorize, simply because of the variated impressions they use in their music and lyrics. Think The Hives meets King Khan & The Shrines, combined with garage, punk & psych, and you might be on your way of getting the picture!

Troglodyte Records and JOHN DUVA found each other rather quickly, and as a result the debut of JOHN DUVA will be released by Troglodyte Records in February!

What does Øresund Space Collective Have in Plan for 2012?

In an update on the ØSC official website, Dr. Space tells:

The first concert dates for the year are starting to come in. We are working hard of getting the next studio material finsihed. We have one LP and one CD that need song titles, artwork and to be mastered for release. We are also working on a double DVD live from Loppen 2011, which we have excellent multitrack mixes and 4 camera angles. No idea when this will be finished but I hope by the summer. Thanks to everyone who is buying the lastest CD. I am really happy with the results. A new single out take from the It’s all about Delay sessions is coming out on Jan 21st on Progsphere Records. See you at BETA in Copenhagen on Feb 24th for the first space out of the new year…
