Fughu

fughu

Fughu is a truly modern progressive band with real rock attitude that willingly explores new horizons whilst celebrating the past. Fughu seamlessly fuses Argentinian roots and personal influences to create something unique.

The band was conceived on 31 January at 23:35 hours by the intriguing minds of Ariel Bellizio (guitar) and Alejandro López (drums) in the neighbourhood of Saavedra, Buenos Aires.  It was 1998 or maybe earlier and they scared the kids at school by playing their own versions of metal classics.  Of course after the show they were banned for life!

The school no longer exists but today many former students can be seen head banging at Fughu´s shows.

Time passed and with the addition of Marcelo Malmierca on keyboards, Juan Manuel López on bass and Santiago Bürgi on vocals, the quintet released their album “Absence” which led them to be selected by Dream Theater to open their Argentina show.

Fugu, the Japanese name for the blowfish, is a dish that is considered both exquisite and dangerous, the latter drawn from the toxic nature of parts of the fish itself.

Quantum Sphere

band

London-based prog trio Quantum Sphere, self produced and released their debut album ‘The Space Adventures of Pyjama Boy‘ in July of 2011 after only 2 years after their initial formation.

The band came to be shortly after Mark Smith (The Drummer) spoke of his will to put together a Planet X/Meshuggah style prog band to Greg Knox (The Bassist). Greg immediately thought of guitarist, Joe Pearson (The Guitarist), a friend and member of 2 previous bands that Greg had been in, who had not only shared these influences but had the talent to create something original with them.

Shortly after a phone call and a few emails, the trio started writing. The songs ‘Perplexia‘ and ‘The Space Adventures of Pyjama Boy‘ were written within the space of a few months. Not even 2 years after their first practice sessions, the band had a 9 track album recorded, played shows and had begun planning their Album Launch Party for 2012: a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Described as ‘Sci-fi progressive-metal fusion‘, Quantum Sphere‘s stye combines groovy rhythms and riffs, progressive leads and synths with soundscape orchestrations and outbursts of massive metal moments. All of which are inspired by science, space, extreme metal and computer game music. The songs are complimented with 9 individually crafted visual pieces to add an extra dimension to their live shows.

Quantum Sphere are currently working on new material. They are also planning more gigs and are looking to play festivals around the UK and Europe.

The Space Adventures of Pyjama Boy‘ is available from iTunes.

Bitter Resolve

BR

It’s a sound as old and weathered as the metamorphic bedrock under Chapel Hill, yet Bitter Resolve’s growl and grit also implies the living tectonic forces that oh-so-patiently shape the landscape itself. In debut LP Bows and Arrows Against the Lightning, the trio hearkens to heavy metal’s very inception. Blues riffage is subverted and given sharp, unwieldy angles: drumwork is freed from its traditional homogeneous plod and allowed to move laterally: and the distortion on that bass is just thick enough to give a contact buzz.

Chapel Hill and the Triangle area, until recently, had precious little heavy music to offer: the field is wide-open for Bitter Resolve’s brand of stoner-heaviness. Drummer Lauren Fitzpatrick’s beats are expressive and asymmetrical – she builds them, hammer and nail, from the ground up rather than subscribing to established rock drummer tropes. Walsh chugs with pagan defiance on a bass a year older than Black Sabbath. And guitarist R. Corey Dial grins euphorically, playing with his entire body as he solos or crunches along. His enthusiasm is as infectious as the patient thickness of music not evolved from, but born alongside 70s hard-smoking proto-metal.

The record demands high-volume treatment and the live show is full-body experience, like a medieval battle witnessed firsthand, as Bitter Resolve fights for every inch of ground on some rugged, battered field.

“A Special Album of the Week!”

“All Tomorrows” by Daymoon / Fred Lessing

This is a tribute to Ines, his wife, who passed away just a few days ago. It is a collection of songs written for her by Fred. She was diagnosed with cancer and after a long struggle she passed on.

During this difficult time in his life, and that of his friends and families, let us honor Ines by hearing this album in full. I messaged with Fred briefly and he said it would be ok to do this.

Please join me during this time and let’s lift up Fred and those who love Ines! Please pass the message along if you will.

Thanks,
Steve.

We would love to express our sincere condolences to Fred Lessing, family and friends on the death of your loving Ines.

Fred Laird of Earthling Society Releasing Debut Album on May 21

Music from the Green Ray.

Fred Laird, frontman to the psychedelic rock group, Earthling Society, releases his debut album in celebration of the old ones.

Moon Of Ostara is a proto-druidic hallucinogenic journey into the realms of the star child. Four meditations influenced by the krautrock of Ash Ra Tempel, Harmonia and Walter Wegmullers mystical “Tarot” album.

Ostara is the first day of spring. The energies of nature shift from the death knell of winter to the expansion of spring. The Earth Goddess opens her gates and fertility burst forth bringing with it the star child. He walks the greening fields and makes the hours of day and night equal. He impels the wild creatures to reproduce and he sleeps as a guest in the house of the Interpreter. He is the star child, cosmic and wild; who tells the ages of the moon if not he?

Track Listing:

  1. The Star Child Part 1
  2. The Star Child part 2
  3. The Star Child part 3
  4. The Star Child Part 4

This album will be released on 21st May as a strictly limited CD and strictly unlimited download.
